In October 2008, our region suffered a historic real estate collapse brought on by short-sighted deregulation and Wall Street excess. Since then, Sen. Soto has been at the forefront of protecting homeowners in the Florida Legislature to shepherd us through these difficult times. Darren worked with religious groups, community activists and a legion of homeowners to fight off two (2) attempts to pass non-judicial foreclosure in Florida to assure Floridians have a right to court when facing foreclosure. He also sponsored the Foreclosure Bill of Rights to push for foreclosure settlements at the actual market value of the home.
Sen. Soto pushed for mediation and foreclosure court funding to assure homeowners had the opportunity to discuss potential settlement with banks and had enough judges to hear their cases. He is diligently pursuing reform of our Hardest Hit Fund ($1B in federal funds) to assure relief gets to more families particularly those who are back to work and can afford their mortgage payments again. Darren also has and will continue to sponsor legislation to minimize foreclosure-related debt so our families and our economy can move forward.
